Chain technology

Chains in drive technology are used to transfer power and motion between shafts, often at high loads and in situations where reliable and efficient transmission is required. They are resistant to wear, offer high power transmission and are efficient in transmitting power over longer distances. Chains are widely used in industrial machinery, vehicles, conveyors and agricultural machinery. They are available in different types, such as roller chains and flat chains, depending on the application and required load capacity. Chains require regular maintenance for optimum performance.

Kettingen kunnen wij ook leveren als maatwerk in elke gewenste lengte (zie FAQ onderaan pagina)

At Aandrijftechniek.nl we advise and supply drive chains that should generate revenue for our customers, whether they come from our standard range or are custom-made. Our independent position is of great importance in this. Although we work closely with the best international brands, we make our decisions autonomously. We are guided exclusively by the application and the associated performance requirements. These factors determine the quality and price of our products.

Total supplier for chain technology

Our development from a specialist in roller chains and conveyor chains to a total supplier of drive solutions has given us unique expertise. We know better than anyone else which properties drive chains must meet to guarantee trouble-free production processes. Whether it concerns lightweight RVC chains, robust steel chains with a corrosion-resistant coating, parallel chains, low-maintenance chains or advanced lubrication techniques, we know the range and make what is not available.

Frequently asked questions about Chain Technique

Ja, dit kan zeker. Als u ons de exacte maat opgeeft kunnen wij een riem of ketting op elk gewenst formaat leveren.

Opm. maatwerk kan alleen niet geretourneerd worden. Wij maken hem volgens uw opgave.

The choice depends on three factors:

  • Transmissible power (kW) and rotational speed (rpm) → use the chain selection table based on the calculation force Fd = P × f / v (where f is the service factor).
  • Environmental conditions: corrosive environment → stainless steel chain; food products → maintenance-free chain (H-series, PTFE-grease-free).
  • Pitch: smaller pitch = more accurate movement and higher maximum speed; larger pitch = higher load capacity.

A roller chain must be replaced if the elongation exceeds 2% (measured over 12 spindle spacings = 12 × pitch). Check this with a chain stretch gauge. Other signs:

  • Lateral wear of the plates (chain runs wide)
  • Stiff links that do not move smoothly
  • Damaged or broken rollers
  • Chain jumps off the sprocket

Sag method (most commonly used): the sag on the slack side is ideally 2% of the center distance. With a center distance of 500 mm, this means approximately 10 mm of sag.

  • Too tight → overloading of bearings and increased chain wear.
  • Too loose → hitting, shaking and risk of missed teeth.

Check the voltage after the first 50 operating hours, and thereafter at every maintenance.

Ideal transmission ratio: 1:1 to 1:7. Above 1:7, wear increases rapidly due to the 'polygon effect'. Minimum number of teeth on the small sprocket: 17 (fewer teeth = more vibrations). The large sprocket preferably has a prime number of teeth (17, 19, 23…) so that wear is distributed evenly.
