Bearing technology

Bearings are essential for many equipment types with moving parts. They minimize friction, wear, and energy loss between moving parts, improving the machine's lifespan and performance. Various types of bearings are available, such as ball bearings, rolling bearings, roller bearings, and plain bearings, each with unique characteristics, benefits, and applications. Choosing the right type of bearing depends on factors such as load, speed, temperature, space, installation, and maintenance. We are happy to advise you in making the right choice. Frequently Asked Questions about Bearing Technology

Four factors determine the bearing choice:

  • Load direction: radial (perpendicular to the shaft) → ball bearing; axial (along the shaft) → axial bearing; combined → tapered roller bearing.
  • Speed: higher speeds → ball bearing (lower friction). Heavy low speeds → roller bearing.
  • Accuracy: precision applications → P5/P4 tolerance class.
  • Environment: damp/dirty → sealed bearing (2RS or ZZ); high temperatures → special lubricants or ceramic bearings.

  • 6 = Single row deep groove ball bearing
  • 2 = Diameter series (lightweight version)
  • 05 = Drill diameter 5 × 5 = 25 mm
  • 2RS = Two rubber seals on both sides

Other commonly used suffixes: ZZ = steel cover washers | C3 = increased radial clearance (higher temperatures) | NR = ring groove for circlip.

For standard bearings (ISO tolerances), these brands are interchangeable in terms of size. The quality differences lie in steel composition and heat treatment (influence on service life), dimensional accuracy within the tolerance range, and the quality of the manufacturer's lubricant.

For critical applications, it is advisable to stick with the same brand. Aandrijftechniek.nl supplies FAG, SKF, NSK and Timken bearings and advises per application.

Never strike the ball row. The load force must be transferred via the ring to be pressed:

  • Mount on shaft (inner track fits): press only on the inner ring.
  • Indoor assembly (outer track fits): press only on the outer ring.
  • Use a Simatherm induction heater for larger bearings (>80 mm bore): heat to 80–100°C, never above 120°C.
  • Lightly lubricate the mating surfaces with motor oil before assembly.

A bearing block combines a flat-face insert ball bearing with a cast iron housing. This compensates for minor misalignment errors (up to ~3°). Types:

  • UCP: pilot units with foot flange (2 bolt holes, on the side)
  • UCF: square flange (4 bolt holes, mounting on a flat surface)
  • UCFL: oval flange, two bolt holes, for narrow mounting surfaces
  • UCFC: flange block with round flange
