Use our free calculation tool!

Every technician knows the moment: a V-belt gives out, you take it off, and the marking is long gone. Or you order a replacement belt based on the part number, and yet the length isn't quite right. How is that possible? The answer lies in something that is often overlooked: V-belts come in multiple lengths simultaneously. And they are not always measured at the same point.

One belt, four ways to measure it

A V-belt is not a flat band; it has a wedge shape. This means that the inside, the outside, and the middle of the belt all have different circumferences. That is why, in practice, there are four different length designations:

Li – internal length Measured along the inside of the belt. This was the standard for classic V-belts (DIN 2215) for a long time and is often listed as the only measurement on older belts.

La – external length The circumference along the outside. Handy to measure if you simply wrap the belt around a tape measure or piece of string — but not the size you need when ordering.

Ld – target length (also known as: Lp or Lw) This is the measurement that really matters. The sight length is measured at the neutral plane of the belt — the point where the tension threads are located and where the belt neither stretches nor contracts. ISO 4184 stipulates that this is the official standard measurement. Modern belts always state the Ld.

Lw / Lp – effective length / stitch length These are two names for the same thing: the length of the belt measured stretched, from end to end. Numerically identical to the guide length Ld.

Classic or narrow profile, the difference adds up

There is always a fixed correction value between the internal dimension (Li) and the guide length (Ld). This value varies per profile, and that difference is greater than you might think.

For classic profiles (Z, A, B, C, D, E):

Profile

Ld = Li + …

Z / ZX

+ 23 mm

A / AX

+ 30 mm

B / BX

+ 45 mm

C / CX

+ 59 mm

D

+ 76 mm

E

+ 93 mm

For narrow profiles (SPZ, SPA, SPB, SPC):

Profile

Ld = Li + …

SPZ / XPZ

+ 38 mm

SPA / XPA

+ 46 mm

SPB / XPB

+ 60 mm

SPC / XPC

+ 84 mm

If you order based on the wrong size, the belt can be too tight or too loose — and that is not only annoying, but also bad for the lifespan of both the belt and the bearings.

Belt without markings? Here's how to measure it anyway

If there is nothing left on the belt, there are three practical options:

Measure outside — Place a flexible measuring tape or a piece of string taut along the outside. That gives you La. Subtract the profile correction for La from that to calculate Ld.

Measure inside — measure along the inside for Li, and add the correction value.

Extended measuring — if the belt is broken, lay it straight and measure the total length. That is immediately the Ld/Lw.

Why a calculation tool is indispensable here

So much for the theory, but in practice there is another complication. Because if you want to order a V-belt, you don't just need the belt length. You need to know if the belt is also that length. fits for your setup: the distance between the shafts and the dimensions of the pulleys.

And that is exactly where most people get stuck.

The center distance between two pulleys, together with the pulley diameters, determines the belt length you need. If you calculate this manually, you are dealing with a formula that contains a square root. One calculation error and you order the wrong size.

A good calculation tool solves this in two seconds:

Enter the diameters of the large and small pulleys.

Enter the center distance

The required belt length (Ld) rolls out immediately.

But the tool also works the other way around: do you already know which belt you want to use, but want to know if that belt fits your machine? Then enter the belt length and pulley diameters, and the tool calculates the required center distance. This way, you know immediately if you can reach the setting range of your tensioner.

NB: always use the target diameter of the pulley (Dd), not the outer diameter. Those two are not the same. The difference (dimension C) lies between the outer surface of the pulley and the neutral line of the belt. For an SPZ pulley, this is 2 mm per side; for an SPC, this increases to 4.8 mm. Because you measure the diameter (and therefore two sides), you add or subtract 2 × dimension C.

With the calculation tool, you bypass all those manual corrections and save yourself a return shipment.

Want to get started right away? Use the V-belt length calculator and order the correct size in one go.

Calculate center distance

Calculate the center distance (C) based on belt length and pulley diameters

Input

      Target diameter large disc (D₁)

mm

      Target diameter small disc (D₂)

mm

      Target length V-belt (Ld)

mm

    Calculate center distance →

Check the input.
